Stuff Scene Kids Like

Tonight, I was given the opportunity to check out Black Bell Record's introductory band, The Joy Formidable.  That's form-id-a-ble for those of you with reading and or pronunciation issues.  The Joy Formidable is a Welsh three piece (currently residing in London) that I had known little about prior to the show, but I like to keep an open mind and an open ear.  As I approached Mercury Lounge on the cold spring evening, a line could be seen surrounding the venue as their set time neared. I walked passed the bar into the venue area and was surprised at how packed it was. 

Your usual Lower East Side hipster crowd mixed with some young and old, and of course your favorite industry a+r and execs.  The trio began their set shortly after 8 and played for about 45 minutes or so.  The first song was my first ever experience listening to the band so I wasn't sure what to expect.  They opened with an interesting blend of melodic mush as frontwoman singer / guitarist Ritzy Bryan and bassist Rhydian Dafydd began rocking out to the hard pounding hits of drummer Matt Thomas. 

The intro track and into the first song really got the sold out crowd into it, starting off with loads of energy and emotion.  The second song of the set was much catchier than the first, although it followed a similar melodic structure, as i feel most of the songs did... not necessarily in terms of notes, but in the way that the songs were written.  Songs 3 - 6 all had similar feels and it's not hard to distinguish this Indie pop band. They've identified their sound and know how to work it.  Song 7 started off with what seemed like a biblical monologue of sorts which was totally bizarre but it quickly moved into a smooth rock ballad with a fluid set of harmonious verses.  The 8th and final song seemed to be the most popular amongst the mixed demographic and was decent until the end.  As the band was finishing up the song they transformed their way into an incredible outro lasting 3-4 minutes.  It was an intoxicating aura of rock blasting through the brick walls that lined the lounge... so intense in fact that sweat was dripping down Dafydd's face like a leaky faucet and Bryan ended up on the floor whaling the guitar for the better part of a minute or so. 

It was intense.  They were intense.  That being said, I feel as if the music definitely outshined the vocals.  The melodies seemed very safe and confined, as I eluted to earlier...which is unfortunate because Bryan can sing and has a nice, quality tone.  I expected better things from her vocally after listening to the first couple of songs and was slightly disappointed in that.  They sound like a handful of bands, but you just can't seem to put your finger on it.  However, they fit their mold. They are an Indie band and aren't fooling anyone when it comes to their songs.

If they're playing a venue near you, check it out...they're worth the price of admission and put on a good show.  You can pick up a copy of their 8 track EP A Balloon Called Moaning released May 4th at your favorite music retailer
