This bakery and sandwich café chain, originally from St. Louis, has become a huge hit amongst the scenesters. Panera’s popularity stems from a few basic principles:
Panera Bread’s sourdough bread is delicious.
It is chewy and soft, with a perfectly crunchy crust and the classic sourdough tang.
Panera Bread is “tour food”. On tour, Panera is the five star Wolfgang Puck Café of meals. For someone in a band, it’s worth eating ramen for three days if you know you’ll be able to treat yourself to a Frontega Chicken Sandwich at Panera at the end of the week. Scene kids, unlike musicians, generally live off of their parents’ salary, rather than Top Ramen and merch sales. Thus, it is not an issue to drop $13 on a sandwich, a soda, and soup in a bowl made of bread. Panera Bread satisfies scene kids’ hunger for food, and for cred: “I could totally be on tour no problem, dude, I would just eat fucking Panera Bread everyday”.
The most perplexing appeal of Panera Bread, besides its delicious bread, and its false sense of “ruffing it”, is the sourdough soup bowl. This is something I have never understood. Why the fuck would you want to eat the receptacle that your soup was in? You can’t dip the bread in the soup, because if you do, your soup will fall out of the fucking bowl. Not only that, it costs an extra $4 or so for a loaf of bread with a hole in the middle.
To make up for the overpriced edible bowls, Panera Bread offers free wi-fi at all of its locations. This is the dealbreaker. Unlike any other hip chain café (see Starbucks’ T-Mobile HotSpot), Panera Bread enables scene kids to show off their sweet new MacBook, video chat with their friends in obscure crunkcore bands, and eat soup out of a giant sourdough roll all at the same time. If that isn’t tour life, I don’t know what is.

After days of Taco Bell and Wendy’s, you start to feel it, and start to show it too… It is definately nice to get to a Panera, relax and make use of a steady internet connection to catch up with the world outside the van/bus. Pita Pit is also fucking great.. hit that up whenever you can. Chipotle, Moe’s and Qdoba (to name 3) are always good alternatives! There’s so much good stuff, but Panera ranks up there. Expensive though. |
