I do not understand how Jac Vanek bracelets are popular. I totally have one, but I still do not get it. Scenesters, despite the fact that they say they hate being labeled, have gobbled up Jac’s bracelets that look like DYNMO tags slapped on people’s wrists.

When I first saw people in Jac bracelets, I thought they were kind of silly…whatever. Then i saw people in Not-Jac Jac bracelets (see FTSK, Anarbor, etc). It all really started to blow my mind. Why was it that these bracelets were so popular? How had they not been done before?

That is when it hit me. Jac Vanek: the genius that combined two tacky trends into one hip bunch of plastic bands. Jac’s bracelets are a bigger better version of Livestrong bracelets combined with those old Soffee cheerleading shorts she had lying around in the back of her closet from 1999. Maybe if Livestrong bracelets had been black, and white, and edgy the fad would have lasted. Maybe if Soffees said things like “LEGIT” or “LURKER” on the butt instead of “CUTIE PIE” or “CHEER CHAMP”, they’d still be popular too!

I’m glad Jac found her niche. If bogus shirts, and college don’t pay off, just remember what Jac did, and maybe you’ll invent some kind of cool fanny pack, or a way to make black socks and sandals look good. Now, I’m just waiting for my mother to call me up and tell me she found a Jock Vanook knock off at TJ Maxx for $3 instead of $15.
